People are vegan for many reasons and not just for animal welfare. Some people it is for environmental reasons , for health benefits, for humanity and for some people just because they don't like the taste of animal products. Also there may be spiritual/religious reasons.
I think that there are different stereotype's as different people will have different perceptions. I'm not sure about what I would see as a typical vegan. You may find the World Vegan Day - Typical Vegans site interesting.
